I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud I Daffodils poem by William Wordsworth I Analysis line by line
Whenever we discuss the description of Nature through poetic verse, William Wordsworth does always occupies a special place in our hearts. And William Wordsworth’s I wandered lonely as a cloud poem is a supreme example of this.
‘I Wandered Lonely as a cloud’ poem’s theme is based on Nature and its beauty. The poem is based on the event of the visiting of Wordsworth and his sister’s (Dorothy Wordsworth) to a natural site where they (especially, the poet) observe the beauty of Daffodils (one type of flower). That’s why it is called “Daffodils poem” also. Now, we discuss its line-by-line analysis.
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud Analysis:
1st Stanza: One day, the poet was wandering alone like a cloud that doesn’t have his destination. He imagines himself as floating high over vales and hills just what a cloud does. But, then the poet does see a crowd. However, the crowd is none but the daffodils flowers and it’s an example of personification. In the eyes of the poet, the Daffodils seem like human beings who were just beside the lake and under the trees. And, as the air was passing, it seemed that they were fluttering and dancing as human beings do.
2nd Stanza: Now, the poet said, they were huge in numbers. They were as numerous as the stars of the milky way galaxy, who shine and twinkle. Line by line, they were never-ending along the margin of a bay. In the next line, the poet is saying he had seen ten thousand daffodils at a glance. It is an example of hyperbole. And, as an effect of the passing breeze, it seemed as if they were tossing their heads and dancing sprightly.
3rd Stanza: In this stanza, we come to know that the waves of the lake were also dancing there. But, the dance of daffodils was far better from the waves in comparison to their glee(happiness). Now, Wordsworth is saying, being a poet he was naturally joyful at that moment and we're enjoying a jocund company. He gazed….. and gazed as if he did not want to miss any moment. And in the last line of this stanza, he thinks it was one type of wealth for the poet himself.
4th Stanza: In this last stanza of the poem, we come to know that the poem is all about the imagination of a day in the past. And it was so much wonderful experience for the poet that it helps to refresh his mood whenever he is in vacant or in a pensive mood. Lying on his couch (sofa), the poet imagines that experience which creates a clear picture into his ‘inward eye’. Here ‘inward eye’ means nothing but the poet’s imagination in mind.
According to the poet, it becomes bliss of solitude and his heart becomes filled with pleasure after imagining it. Perhaps, the poet also finds himself dancing with the daffodils.
