Arms and the Man: Summary and Analysis - Drama by G.B Shaw
Arms and the Man was the first successful drama written by G.B Shaw. This drama includes only three acts and almost five or six characters in the text. In this drama, G.B Shaw criticizes romantic notions regarding a soldier. So, let's move to the next section where we will discuss its brief summary.
Arms and the Man Summary: Raina is the name of the heroine of this play. Catherine is her mother and they belonged to the Petkoff family. Recently, it is found through the text that Raina’s marriage has been fixed with a man, named Sergius. Sergius indulges in the Armed forces and has a higher rank. Now, he has gone to serve his country and Raina has made some feelings by seeing his portrait all the time. One night, Raina and her mother Catherine were talking about Sergius and the Servia-Bulgarian war.
Later, that day a soldier who is from another country saves his life by staying the Petkoff’s house. Some soldiers are chasing after him but somehow he enters into the room of Raina. The name of that soldier is Bluntschli. On that night many more things occurred like Raina got to know some facts about military forces, chitchat of Raina and Bluntschli, Bluntschli’s final departure with the help of Mr. Petkoff’s coat, etc.
Louka and Nikola are the servants of the Petkoff’s house. Though Louka is a mere maid she is very beautiful and her aim is not to be married to any servant. Whether Louka is highly ambitious and charming, Nikola is very down to earth as a servant. He always obeys the orders of his master. Eventually, the story goes but something different happens. Louka ends up with a relation with Sergius and Raina falls in love with Bluntschli. And there it ends. In this play, we don’t find any chemistry or romance, so some scholars say it as an anti-romantic play.
Here, I want to say it is not at all interesting as we find no such maturity in characters. And it is my own opinion, I genuinely did not like the play. As there is no such theme in the play, the characters are not very strong enough of whom we compare in real life, So it did not move me at any edge. It was my honest opinion. See you in the next post.
